Tiny Tips for Building Small Houses

ADUs are hot right now. High land costs and permitting concessions have made the thought of building an Accessory Dwelling Unit or a Guest House popular among homeowners and want-to-be homeowners in the last couple of years. If you’ve thought about building an ADU, take these words of advice from a trusted general contractor.

1) Think about why you’re building an ADU.

Are you building a place for your parents to live so they can be close to the grandkids? Are you providing a home base for your parents when they’re not traveling? Are you hoping to list it on Airbnb? Are you building a home so you can downsize? Whatever the reason, why you’re building an ADU will dictate many of the design and budget decisions you make.

2) Remember the size.

Tiny houses can live large. While most ADUs are set out so they are comfortable, it’s worth remembering that the space can be used up quickly. That means we have to make smart decisions and set real priorities. Are you willing to give up a full-size refrigerator and stove for a dedicated workspace? There are many happy compromises – but they just need to be made!

3) Consult Your Architect

Even though the architect may be a complete stranger, he or she can make the best decisions in what can be an emotional process. He or she will be a trained expert in building ADUs and will have the right answers to suit your needs. Talk to your architect as soon as possible to determine the style, budget, and process of building your new property!
